2000 CEO Award for Volunteerism

Arizona Employees Honored for Volunteer Efforts

Motorola's CEO Award for Volunteerism is the highest recognition an individual or team of Motorolans can receive for community involvement and volunteer efforts. Each year, Motorola employees from around the world are nominated for the prestigous award. The individual award honors a long-term commitment, while a team award recognizes exceptional group projects or programs.

Nineteen individuals and two teams, nominated from Arizona for their community involvement in 2000, were honored during National Volunteer Week on April 26 at Motorola University in Tempe.

During the local celebration event for the nominees, Lawrence Moore, IISG's Director of Communication and Public Affairs, said, "I think it's only fitting that we have the opportunity to honor our own Motorola volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Year after year, I have the great honor of announcing and congratulating our Arizona nominees. And it never ceases to amaze and humble me - the incredible spirit that lives and thrives in all of them."

Two Arizona Employees Received the 2000 CEO Award for Volunteerism

Congratulations to Bill Austin and Bruce Lund who have been selected to receive the CEO Award for Volunteerism for their community involvement in 2000. Bill and Bruce are among 10 individual winners of the global award.

BILL AUSTIN

In 1994, Bill Austin was one of the original creators of Aztec Computing Free-Net, providing free server space and web site development for community groups, low-income and non-profit organizations.

Through AZTEC Computing Free-Net, Bill has been instrumental in helping more than 30,000 Arizona residents to conquer the digital divide - by receiving FREE internet access. In addition, the group also provides refurbished computers from ASU, enabling community centers, churches, schools and libraries to offer free Internet access to the people in their communities. Under Bill's leadership, Aztec Computing Free-Net was awarded two grants from the Arizona Public Libraries System. Bill is currently serving as President of Aztec Computing Free-Net and as a webmaster providing consultation and volunteer training to community-based organizations.

BRUCE LUND

More than 2 decades ago, Bruce and several like-minded individuals recognized the need for funding therapy services for middle income families with handicapped children in Maricopa County.

Bruce and his partners wanted disabled children to receive the physical, speech and occupational therapy they needed, when the insurance companies wouldn't cover it and the parents couldn't afford it. Together, they created Child Improvement Through Therapy - a non-profit organization. They started with their own money, believing that the community would support their efforts. Over the past 21 years, CITT has raised $640,000 through their annual benefit dinner and auction, and walk-a-thon. These funds allow CITT to provide families with half the annual cost of therapy for their children. This year, for the first time, CITT is funding 80 children with multiple therapies and there is no waiting list!
